The weather has been much better here the past few
weeks. It’s stopped raining! Evidently the official rainy season is from
June 1 – October 1. Who knew? At least we’ve pretty much made it through
the “hurricane season”. It’s officially
over next month. We’ve been really lucky
this year. We are staying here through
October, at least NautiNell is. We are
planning to head back to Joplin for a visit the end of October. We’ll get back to NautiNell around the 10th
of November or so and head her down the west coast back to Marathon in the
Keys. There we’ll spend the winter at
Sombrero Marina where we stayed last year.
After that – not sure. We’ll
either head over to the Bahamas in the spring – or back up the west coast of
Florida – or maybe up to the rivers in Tennessee – or who knows. That remains a mystery at this point.
We’ve been pretty busy the last couple of weeks since my
last post. I did talk Mike into spending
a day at the beach on Anna Maria Island.
It was a beautiful day and plenty of sunshine. It isn’t as crowded now but there’s still
plenty of people to watch. In fact –
talk about a small world! A group of
people set up their chairs and umbrellas right next to us. Of course, we began
talking to them. It turns out they were
from Warrensburg, Missouri which is only a couple of hours or so from Joplin. That isn’t the best of it - the couple’s
daughter is dating the son of our friends from Joplin – Claude and Gloria! What a small world! Before we left the Island we had to stop in
for a cold beer at one of Mike’s favorite dives – the Drift In. Lots of local color there. Never disappointed!
The Village of the Arts District held their First Friday
Event again this past week. It was a
little better than the last – more going on.
Things are picking up around here more as the winter season approaches. We had fun looking at all the exhibits of the
so called “art”! After that we walked
downtown to Old Main Street area and ate at O’Bricks. A nice place to eat – had my first Lobster
BLT. Really good! Don’t find that at home!
The Farmers Market has started up again on Saturday mornings. Couldn’t miss this! We’ve gone a couple of times now and always
find some good bargains – well at least – good fresh veggies and fruits.
Last Saturday we went to another car show. This time it was in Sarasota. Guys do like their cars around here and Mike
loves to check them out. This one had a
lot more cars to see. It was well worth
the short drive to Sarasota (only about 15 minutes).
We decided the other day to take a scooter trip and explore
Emerson Point Preserve. It’s just over
the bridge to Snead Island about 4 miles or so away. Emerson Point Preserve is a 365 acre preserve
located at the tip of Snead Island.
Emerson Point is located at the mouth of the Manatee River where it meets
Lower Tampa Bay. It seems there are
always dolphin there hanging about and the fishing is good too. It’s really like the old Florida with its
shady trails, wildlife and native plants.
Hmm, I sound like a tour guide….
Anyway it was really nice there – I would have liked to walk some of the
trails but we came over in our flip-flops.
Maybe next time we’ll be more prepared.
So instead of walking the trails we rode the scooters over to a great
Mexican restaurant in nearby Palmetto.
Great margaritas!
One day Mike was busy finishing up the work on the generator
and Tom (one of the other boaters here) was busy working on his engine – so his
wife, Joyce and I went to breakfast and then off to the Premium Outlet Mall in
Ellenton. This place is huge and has a
great variety of stores. I would love to
go back sometime before we leave. Wish I
had known more about it when my friend Pam was here – we would have definitely
made a day of it! Next time!!
Yesterday, Mike and I checked out the “First Annual Braden
River American Music fest at the Linger Lodge”.
It was a blast! The weather was
nice, the scenery great and the music was even better. We ate lunch at the Lodge and then sat out in
the shade listening to the music while enjoying a cold beer. It was a very relaxing day. This was the first one so I expect it to grow
by next year. Wish we could get the
Whaler up here but we tried and couldn’t before. There’s a dam and we can’t
portage over it – so we had to go by car. There were several people in kayaks out on the
water though. Pretty cool.
Today one of the couples here invited us to go out for a
boat ride. They wanted to take their
boat out for a while and enjoy getting away from the dock. There were three couples counting us. It was a gorgeous day for a boat ride. We went out into the Bay past a great looking
sandbar/party area. We dropped a hook
near Emerson Point where we enjoyed each other’s company along with mimosas and
hot wings. Couldn’t have been any
better. It turned out to be about a four
hour “tour”. I think that’s the first time Mike and I have actually went out on
someone else’s boat where we did not have to worry about anything - so we could
just enjoy the ride. What a great day!!
Well, that’s about it for this posting. It’s getting time now to think about
dinner. Think we’re cooking on the
grill.
Till next time
Admiral “C”
P.S. For those of you in Joplin - we'll see you soon!
